Captain James “Jim” Shepherd, 66, died at the Toni & Trish House in Auburn on Nov. 6, 2010. Jim was born in Midland on July 21, 1944 to the late Vivian Lucille (Shell) and Edison A. Shepherd. Shepherd graduated from Midland High School in 1962 and from Ferris State College in 1964. In 1967, he graduated from Michigan State University and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. In 1968, he was commissioned Ensign, Medical Service Corps, USNR and ordered to Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Ill, as assistant food service officer. From June 1969 through July 1970, then-LT.j.g. Shepherd served at the Station Hospital, Naval Support Activity, Danang, Republic of Vietnam. Subsequent tours included duty as chief of Food Management Service at Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Wash,; Great Lakes, Ill.; and Portsmouth, Va. In 1977, Shepherd received his master of arts in health facilities management. From 1982 to 1983, he served as assistant director of administrative services at NRMC, Portsmouth, Va., and subsequently as the director of administrative services. In June 1983, Shepherd received orders to report to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, as the hospital’s first executive officer. From July 1986 through September 1987, Shepherd served as executive officer of Naval Hospital in Groton, Conn. He assumed the duties of commanding officer of the Naval Hospital in Millington, Tenn., in October 1987. Shepherd was the first Medical Service Corps. officer to command the Naval Hospital in Millington. In Aug. 1990, he reported to the Naval Healthcare Support Office in Norfolk, Va., as head of health care operations. In December 1990, Shepherd reported as officer in charge of Naval School of Health Sciences, Bethesda Detachment, Portsmouth, Va. In July 1993, Shepherd assumed his position as officer in charge, Naval Office of Medical/Dental Affairs at Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Ill. Shepherd has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation with two stars, and the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation. He additionally wears the Overseas Service Ribbon, the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Commendation and Civil Action Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Shepherd retired from the U.S. Navy in 1998 after 30 years of service. Shepherd was an Eagle Scout, he loved walking, cooking, golf, the outdoors, music and reading. Jim’s family would like to give special thanks to Southern Care Hospice and to the volunteers at the Toni & Trish House. Shepherd is survived by his son, James Stewart Shepherd; sisters, Connie (Jack) Cron, Judy (Marvin) Church; brother, Gary (Cindy) Shepherd; nieces and nephews, Jeff (Karen) Cron, Cari (Omer) Samyn, James (Rhonda) Cron, Jon Church, Brian Church, Troy (Andrea) Shepherd, Sara Shepherd; 8 great nieces and nephews and his beloved friend Jill Ashey. A Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, on Wed. Nov. 10 at 11:00 am with Pastor Gerald Ferguson officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00 until the time of the service.
