David R. Sylvester, age 85, of Midland passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at MidMichigan Medical Center. He was born February 19, 1929, in Menominee, Michigan to the late Roland and Esther (MacCourt) Sylvester. He married Bernadette Adams on August 1, 1985 who predeceased him on June 5, 2010. David graduated from Purdue University in 1952 with a BS in Chemical Engineering, honorary Baccalaureate Degree with Distinction. He worked as a Chief Product Steward and Senior QA Specialist out of Dow Corning’s major divisions. David’s faith was paramount in his life. He was always seeking and growing as a spiritual person. David was always looking for opportunities to mentor and counsel people, especially in matters of faith. He was a wise and gentle man. David had a brilliant renaissance mind and was a voracious reader of philosophy, science, theology, apologetics, cosmology and numerous other topics. He followed current events with a keen interest. David was also an accomplished photographer and loved music. He has a great eye and ear for beauty. He was an all-around handy man and mechanically inclined. David came from a long line of carpenters. He loved to travel and spend time in nature, especially the Upper Peninsula and coastline of Lake Superior. David had a great sense of humor, with a dry wit.David is survived by his daughters; Judith Vincent, Barbara (Robert) Bailey, Elizabeth MacCourt and Ruth MacCourt, son, David Sylvester, grandchildren; Jason(Jennifer) Leff, Leo Sylvester, Nyesha Bryant, Cameron MacCourt, and great grandchildren; Gabriel Bryant, Noella and Mirabelle Leff. He is also survived by Edith Sylvester his former wife and the mother of his children.David was predeceased by his son John Sylvester and brother William Sylvester.A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 28, 2014 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Pastor Mike Wilson and Pastor Sarah Carver officiating. Friends can visit with the family on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 4-7 pm at Smith-Miner Funeral Home and on Friday at the church from 10am until the time of service.
