Welcome to Smith Miner

Elaine (Tootie) Wetherell, 92, of Sanford, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 8, 2021, at Meridian Acres following a brief illness. Elaine was the eldest child born to Loyal and Gladys Hayes on September 21, 1928. She graduated from Midland High School in 1946 and shortly thereafter, on February 4, 1947, married Leslie D. Wetherell. Elaine and Les settled on the lake in Sanford and had two daughters.

In addition to raising two daughters Elaine worked for Sears until the late 1980’s when it closed in downtown Midland. She was also an avid bowler, beginning her hobby in 1953 and continuing until early this year. Bowling, serving as the secretary for the Midland Bowling Association for more than 20 years, and the friends she made through the sport have been a focal point of her life and although Elaine would consider the friends she made along the way to be the highpoint, she was also a very skilled bowler and was inducted into the Midland Bowling Hall of Fame in 1990. In addition to bowling, she was a member of the Midland American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed golfing, gardening, nature, and travel. She and Les enjoyed traveling together, including several trips overseas. Elaine’s favorite travels however were driving around the country with Les in one of several RV’s they owned. Together they visited every state but Hawaii. In addition to these activities Elaine played a huge role in the lives of her

grandchildren and great grandchildren; always there to help when they were sick, to make them feel special, and teach them an appreciation for all the wonderful things in nature.

She is survived by her children, Leslie (Lee) Kettren of Gaylord and Marilyn (Dennis) O’Neil of Sanford. She is also survived by two siblings, Steve (Toni) Hayes of Sanford and Raymond (Renee) Hayes of Bay City; her grandchildren Denise (John) McDonald of Rogers, AR, Casey (Nate) Reed of Midland, Jeff (Stacey) Sielinski of Clarkston, Sean (Shannon) O’Neil of Midland, Jamie (Michael) Coventry of Springfield, Virginia, and Jennifer (Brian) Humensky of Dobbs Ferry, New York; 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, including Dan McMillan and Jim Hayden who both shared her birthday.

Having lived such a long and fulfilling life, Elaine has many family members and friends waiting patiently to welcome her home, including her husband of 42 years, Les; her siblings, Doreen Yobst of Midland, Janice McMillan of Midland, Doug Hayes of Bullhead City, AZ; and many close friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Northern Lanes Bowling Youth League or Meridian Acres.

I met Elaine on the Monday senior bowling league. She told me that when she was my age she had a high average and bowled like me. I told her that I hope I bowl like her when I am her age. She was a really nice lady and I loved her very much. I will miss her.
