Welcome to Smith Miner

(August 26, 1916 – October 25, 2012)

Elizabeth, affectionately call “Liz” or “Aunt Liz”, was born August 26, 1916 in Midland, Michigan. She was the only daughter of Albert and Bessie (Taylor) Smith, however, she had two older brothers and two younger brothers, making Liz the middle child. Liz attended Midland Public Schools. She worked as secretary of Fisher Sand and Gravel when the small office was located out Pine River Road. She worked there for six years. From there she held a secretarial position for twenty-six years at the Midland County Road Commission in the office at the Midland Court House. Liz retired from the Road Commission in 1978. Liz has been a member of the First Baptist Church since she was 15 years old. She loved her church and her church family. She served as Sunday School Teacher for several years, was a member of a woman’s circle in which she was very active. She also took very seriously her role as a Stephen Minister in the Baptist Church. Along with love of church she also held her family very close to her heart. She was responsible for every member of the family knowing when there was wonderful news such as births, engagements, marriages, as well as the sadder news of illnesses, surgeries, and deaths. Keeping the family together was very important to Aunt Liz. She was a very talented lady, and had many hobbies and interests. Among them were bowling, reading, gardening-flowers being her favorite. She could make almost anything grow and bloom. She also loved to crochet. Babies far and near have baby afghans, her nieces and nephews as well as her brothers and sisters-in-laws all received huge handmade afghans. For many years she would make Christmas ornaments for every member of her large family. She would start them in June and work all summer and fall making them just right. Liz is survived by many nieces and nephews. Liz was predeceased by her parents Albert and Bessie; and her brothers Russell, Edward, Richard and Laurence. Liz’s family would like to personally thank TenderCare and Heartland Hospice. A Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor David Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Midland City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider First Baptist Church. Smith-Miner Funeral Home is assisting the family.
