Elsie I. (Dittenber) Schlagrait, 90, of Midland, died on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 at Tendercare Nursing Home. The daughter of the late Amelia Dittenber was born on Oct. 16, 1920 in Au Gres, MI. She was raised in Midland and graduated from Midland High in 1938. She sang in the Dow Girls’ Chorus while employed at Dow Chemical Co. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, active in choir, Ladies Guild and LWML. She volunteered at Mid Michigan Medical Center for 38 years. She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Joseph) Tafel of Midland and Janet (Edy) Maeder of Dwight, IL; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Mark Tafel, Erik Maeder and Pamela (Allen) Rotert; and sister Frieda Milano. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Otto, her parents, brothers Arthur, Bernard and Merlin Dittenber and sister Adeline Bradshaw. A Funeral Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 at 11:00 am with Reverend Larry Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Midland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 from 4 til 7 pm, and on Wednesday at the church from 10 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorial offerings to go to Our Savior Lutheran Church or Midland County Senior Services Meals on Wheels. Online condolences can be given at smithminer.com.
