Fern I. (Weninger) Thompson, 97, passed away on her birthday, November 6, 2014 at Bickford Cottage of Midland. She was born November 6, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Frank and Anna (Petersen) Weninger and was the youngest of 5 children. Fern met Richard Kuenzel Thompson, Jr. at the University of Illinois. They married 1 year after graduation and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. He predeceased her in 2005. Fern had 3 daughters: Lynne Thompson of Midland, Carol (Jack) Thompson of Sanford and Susie (Gary) Nelson of Carmel, Indiana. She is also survived by 4 granddaughters: Christine (Brad) Boring, Anna (Charles) Keeley, Leah (Tommy) Dunlap, and Melissa (Jamie) Saddler; 4 grandsons: Martin (Jody) Hogan, Christian (Katie) Goralski, Timothy (Beth) Goralski, and Geoffrey (Natalie) Nelson; as well as 17 great-grandchildren. Fern’s passions were family, classical music and animals. She loved playing bridge, going to a good party, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was an active volunteer with the Indianapolis Cancer Society, Carmel Women’s Club, Indianapolis Girl Scouts, Meridian Street Methodist Church, and Carmel Methodist Church. She has been a member of Midland’s Memorial Presbyterian Church for 7 years. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Arrangements are being handled through Smith-Miner Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service at Midland’s Memorial Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Wallace H. Mayton II officiating. Friends can visit with the family on Friday at the church from 10 am until the time of service. Internment services will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana, and will take place on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM.
