Welcome to Smith Miner

George Edward Bartos, age 92, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on July 15, 2019.  He was born in Midland, Michigan on Old State Road on June 2, 1927 to Henry and Frances (Balcirak) Bartos, the second of 15 children. On November 10, 1951 he married Mary Katherine Radosa who predeceased him on September 30, 2010.

Goerge attended the one-room Leiphart School in Larkin Township and then went on to Midland High School. There were always many chores to do before and after school on the farm, making it difficult to fully participate in the after school intramural sports. After graduation in 1946 he went to work for Dow Corning and a year later joined the Army and was sent to Seoul, Korea for two years and then called back to active duty in South Korea for ten months, before returning to Dow Corning. George spent several years taking engineering courses at Delta College and retired after 43 years with Dow Corning as a designer and project engineer.

Throughout his life, George was very active in his church and the community. He helped build the 1964 and 2000 Assumption Churches and served as an altar boy for 80 years. His love for the Rosary led him to recite it before daily Mass for several years. His relationship with the Holy Spirit influenced his life and he had a great kindness and love for everyone. George was always willing to give a helping hand and there was nothing that he couldn’t fix and make “new again.” He was greatly admired by his family and his many friends and will be dearly missed.

George was especially fond of his yearly vegetable garden, apple orchard and blueberry patch. He prided himself on his abundant tomato crop. In his earlier years in 4-H, he was noted for his prize-winning potatoes.

George is survived by his four daughters: Diana and her husband Jim White, Denise, Darlene Page, Danette, two grandsons, Kyle & Drew White, granddaughter, Kirsten Page and two great grandchildren, Courtney & Caleb White. He is also survived by three brothers and ten sisters: Virginia Budek, Irene Agostinelli, Lawrence & Patricia Bartos, Ruth & Ray Babinski, Genevieve & Louis Rapin, Raymond & Joan Bartos, Mary Ann Sczepanski, Bernadine LeBeau, John & Sandy Bartos, Delores & Pat Bader, Lucy & William Martin, Sister Maria Bartos, Veronica & Gary Miller, sisters-in-law, Ann (Edward) Badour, Margaret Nowak and Rose (Gary) Verbowski. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, brother, Paul, sister-in-law, Betty (Tom) Darland, and brother-in-law, Duane Nowak.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, July 19, 2019, at Assumption BVM Catholic Church with Fr. Joe Griffin officiating. Friends may visit with the family of Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home from 5-7:00 pm, with a vigil commencing at 6:30 pm, and on Friday at the church from 9:00 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at New Calvary Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Senior Services Meals on Wheels or Sanford American Legion for Medical Equipment Donations.

I have great memories of working with George at Dow Corning. His knowledge of the Midland Plant was unsurpassed. I especially enjoyed the summer of 1986 when we often teamed up in the lunchtime card game. I can still hear him yelling “Geronimo” as we stole another point. RIP George.

I have fond memories of gardening and cutting down Christmas trees with dad at “Uncle” George’s. I am also most appreciative of George in my dad’s (Bernie Bartos) last days. George was at dad’s anointing of the sick and that meant a lot to dad. Dad was not at peace and George came over to visit. Dad was visibly more peaceful after the visit. I also am thankful that George led the rosary reciting at both my Mom and Dad’s funerals. George was a caring man and good friend to my dad. Love, prayers, and best wishes to your family during this difficult time.
