Welcome to Smith Miner

(June 29, 1933 – March 25, 2012)

Georgia Ann Handt, 78, beloved wife and mother of the Handt family of Midland moved into the Kingdom of God on Sunday morning, March 25th. She is survived by Paul, her husband of 55 years, 3 children, Christine of Midland, Laurence (Stacey) of North Wales, PA, and Jeffrey of Ann Arbor and a grandson, Chase. Georgia was the second daughter of University of Wisconsin Professor Benjamin Elliott and his wife Georgia Mae. Georgia graduated with Honors and a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1955. She met her future husband, Paul, within a month of arriving in Midland. They were engaged within 3 months and married in May of 1957. Georgia was the first dedicated full time childrens librarian at the Grace A. Dow Public Library. She is fondly remembered for the many story hours she presented to hundreds of Midland children (ages4-8) during her tenure. She created a wide variety of finger/hand puppets and other props to dramatize the story lines. She continued her craft in Saginaw for 2 years after leaving the Dow Library. She finished the last several years of her career managing the Book Nook at the Village Green, where her extensive knowledge of children’s books guaranteed repeat customers. Georgia and Paul have been long time members of the First United Methodist Church prior to and since their marriage by the Reverend Dr. McKay. Her fondness for children led to active participation at the church’s Epworth Nursery and Sunday school during their children’s early years. In addition, she volunteered for many years in the local schools and at the West Midland Family Center. Georgia was an avid reader of mysteries and romances. She enjoyed collecting seasonal decorations. Georgia traveled extensively during her youth and then with the family, especially to the National Parks. She was very proud of her childrens’ accomplishments. A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Charles Keyworth officiating with burial to follow in Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 28, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday.
