Herman “Fritz” Thurston, 81, of Midland, died at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland, on July 21, 2011. Herman was born on January 4, 1930 in Midland to the late, William and Dorothy (Sanderson) Thurston. Herman was married to his friend and sweetheart Norma Spangler. Herman served in the US Air Force during the Korean War, from Nov. 28, 1950 to his honorable discharge on Nov. 27, 1953. He worked for the City of Midland as an electrician for 23 yrs. retiring in 1976. Herman was a member of the Sanford American Legion. He loved playing cards, outside crafts and riding motorcycles. Herman is survived by his loving wife Norma; daughters, Shirley (Michael) Van Horn of Sanford, Vickie (Steve) Hammond of Sanford; son, Richard (Brenda) Thurston of Sanford; stepchildren, Ford(Patricia)Spangler of Bay City, Roxanne (Robert) Letts of Midland; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; sister, Blanch (Edward) Holliday of Midland and brother, Elmer (Grace) Thurston of Midland, best friend and cousin Dave Thurston of Midland. Herman was predeceased by his grandson, Jeremy Hammond; great granddaughter Kegan Geiersbach; great grandson Randy VanHorn; sisters, Margaret, Lydia, Betty; brothers, Robert Jimmie, William Jr. A Memorial Service will be held at the Sanford American Legion on Monday, August 1, 2011 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Bonnie Ortman officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sanford American Legion from 2 until 5:00 pm. Military rites will be observed under the auspices of the US Air Force and the Midland County Veterans. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or to the Veterans Memorial Fund. Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W.
