Horst Gustav Spittka, 74, of Midland, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. The son of the late Friedrich and Gertrude (Schmidt) Spittka. He was born in Klein Dankheim, East Prussia on June 4, 1940. He married his wife, Gayle (Richman) Lewis in 1974.In 1952, Horst immigrated with his family to the Midland area. He graduated from Midland High School in 1959. After 2 years in the Army, Horst returned to Midland and began working for Dow Corning Corporation, where he worked for 35 years. His 17 years of retirement were spent enjoying gardening and the out-of-doors while in Michigan, playing bocci while in Florida, and visiting and talking with friends wherever he was. Horst is survived by his wife Gayle, children: Brian Lewis (Rita) of Shanghai, China, Sara (Steve) Derdowski and thier children Kate, Abigail, Eveline, Claire of Joplin, MO, and Berndt (Leona) Spittka and their children Mason, Gabriel of West Point, NY; brothers: Fred (Esther) Spittka of Midland, Reiny (Sigi) Spittka of Midland, and Wally (Jean) Spittka of Easley, SC, sisters: Traudy (Al) Collins of Canton, MI, and Beate (Dave) Guzdzial of Port Richey, FL and many nieces and nephews.A Funeral Service will take place at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at 11:00 am with Pastor Steve Derdowski and Pastor Paul Spittka officiating. Family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home from 4-7 on Friday, December 19, 2014 and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Larkin Township Cemetery. The family greatly appreciates the care, concern and support given by the doctors and staff at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland.
