Jack D. Starks, 87, of Midland passed away at home surrounded by family on May 16, 2021. He was born on July 23, 1933 to the late Ralph and Rhea (Somerville) Starks. He married Mary Jane Skutt on September 29, 1956 and they shared 43 years together before she predeceased him February 4, 2009.


Jack served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a heavy equipment operation doing construction and he loved to work. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, pool, euchre, auction sales and baseball especially the Detroit Tigers.


Jack is survived by his children, Barbara (Bruce) Curtis, Karen (Brandon) Crouch, Julie (Bill) Hyer, Jack Starks, Kay (Matt) Arnold, Bill Starks, Lloyd (Christine Charville) Starks, Ralph (Kelly) Starks, 24 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister Polly Prince and special family members Mark Brown, Bonnie Ortman, Dave Johnson, Dan Nelson and Penny Searfoss.


Jack was predeceased by his grandson, Matthew Starks, great grandchildren, Remington Starks, Maverick Lamblin, Atreus Long and siblings, Ralph Starks, Don Somerville, Teater Varner and Judy Tripp.


A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Gulick officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 5 – 7 pm and on Thursday from 10 am until the time of service. Burial will take place at Lee Township Cemetery. Military Honors will be under the auspices of the United States Marine Corps and the Midland County Veterans.

    I knew Jack for about 25 years and i think i can honestly say he was one of the kindest men iv ever met. He will be truly missed.

    Heaven gained one amazing person…Jack was my father’s dear friend and when my dad passed Jack helped me around the property a few times and I will never forget his big heart and that big ole smile…….Good bye dear friend….you will be missed dearly…
