James Arthur Mertens, age 66, passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2013. Jim was born in Hartford, CT on March 9, 1947 to Charles and Marie (Johnson) Mertens. He received his BS degree from St. Bonaventure University and received his MBA from New Haven University. He married Barbara Jones on June 13, 1970. Jim began working for the Dow Chemical Co. at Allen’s Point in 1971. He transferred to Midland, MI in January 1980 and worked until his retirement in 2009. During his time at The Dow Chemical Company he participated on the UNEP Montreal Protocol Technology and Economic Assessment Panel, whose job was to determine the technical and economic feasibility of protecting the ozone layer and was awarded the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the EPA for his exceptional contributions to global environmental protection. Jim was active in many organizations and always made sure to put family first. He was a scoutmaster, little league coach, soccer coach, past president of Tri City Cyclists. Jim was an original board member of the Friends of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail. He was a biking enthusiast and enjoyed being a ride leader and teaching his grandsons to ride their bikes. He participated in the Dal-Mac ride from Lansing to the Mackinac Bridge many times. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. Upon retiring, Jim began volunteering as a driver for Senior Services. His is survived by his wife Barbara (Jones) Mertens of Midland, MI; his son, David (Maria Romage) Mertens of Macomb Township, MI; his daughter, Patricia (John) Russell of Midland, MI; two grandsons, that were the light of his life, Matthew and Michael Mertens of Macomb Township, MI; two brothers, Thomas (Maureen) Mertens of Gaylordsville, CT, and Robert (Lorraine) Mertens of Niantic, Ct; sister Loretta (Edward) Eadie of Clinton, CT; father-in-law, George Jones of Waterford, CT; two brothers-in-law George (Deonna) Jones of Scottsboro, AL and John (Karen) Jones of Niantic CT; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many other extended family and friends.He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Mertens; his mother, Marie Mertens; mother-in-law, Veronica Jones; brother, Charles Mertens; brother-in-law, Matthew Jones. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013 at Assumption BVM Catholic Church with Father Joseph Griffin officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013 from 4 until 6:30 pm, at which time a Vigil Service will be held, and on Monday at the church from 9:00 am until the time of the service.
