John A. (Jack) McCandless, 87, died at Woodland Hospice of Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Jack was a lifelong resident of Midland, Michigan. He was born in Bay City, Michigan on September 2, 1928, to the late Gertrude G. and Wayne E. McCandless. He married the former Marlene Ann Johnson on June 20, 1953 in Essexville, Michigan. Jack attended public schools in Midland and participated in sports while in High School. He graduated from Michigan State University in June 1950 and was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. Following graduation from Michigan State, Jack began working at McCandless News Agency which was started by his father in 1926. In 1951 Jack was called to active duty with the U.S. Army where he served in Germany as a 1st Lieutenant. He was discharged in 1952 after 19 months of service and returned to Midland. Jack bought the business later known as McCandless Hallmark, retiring and selling the business in 2003 after 53 years in downtown Midland.Jack was very active in the community. He served on the Midland Hospital Board and was Chairman of the Board for both the Midland Hospital and the Mid-Michigan Regional Health System. He was on the original board of directors of the Regional Imaging Center (MRI) in Auburn and served as Chairman of the Board. He was chairman of the W. D. Towsley, MD College Scholarship Fund. Jack was a director for many years of the First Midland National Bank (now Comerica Bank), the First National Investment Company, Midland Planning Committee, Downtown Development Authority, Salvation Army Board, Council on Domestic Violence, Downtown Business Association, and Eagle Village Board.Some of Jack?ÇÖs many memberships over the years included Blessed Sacrament Parish, Midland Elks Club, Trout Unlimited, Midland Country Club and Midland Noon Rotary Club for 55 years. He was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary in 1997. He was a life member of The Michigan State University Alumni Association. Jack was an avid sports fan especially Michigan State University. He had football season tickets for over 50 years, was a long time member of The Ralph Young Fund at MSU and a Lifetime member of the Snyder Society. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid trout fisherman.Jack is survived by his four children, Jim (Kathy) McCandless, Sue (Dick) Goff, Tom (Eve) McCandless and John McCandless, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Jack is also survived by his sister Janice (Olie) Mace, his brother Jim (Jane) McCandless and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Marlene Johnson and his grandson James Ryan McCandless.Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home with the Rev. Kurt Eichinger officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Ryan McCandless Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund at Ferris State University.
