John L. Van Meter, 89, died September 21, 2011. He was born in Vestaburg on June 24, 1922 to John L and Mary Ann (Shantz) Van Meter. John grew up in Midland. He joined the army at eighteen and fought in France and Germany with General George S. Patton in WWII. He Married Rowena Hutchinson September 23, 1945. John worked for 43 years at the Dow Chemical Company where he retired as a Multi-Tradesman in Instrument Research. He loved his family. He enjoyed the Detroit Tigers, his garden, dragging beginner water skiers around Wixom Lake and strawberry shortcake. John is survived by his wife Rowena; children, Sally Van Meter, Dan Van Meter, Catherine DeMocker; grandson John DeMocker, sister Dena (Ernie) Simmerman and brother Melvin (Betty); sister-in-law Willie Van Meter. His parents; brothers, Harvey and Louis; sister Vera Adams preceded him in death. A graveside service will be held Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:00 am at Midland City Cemetery.
