John Ralph Whittington, 89, life-long resident of Midland, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012. John was born Nov. 16, 1922 in Midland County to the late Henry and Mary E. Whittington. He was married to Helen Sandow for 45 years. She predeceased him on Sept. 2, 1991. This proud Marine served in World War II where he was stationed in the Philippines. John then worked for 35 years as a welder in the boiler shop at Dow Chemical Company and was highly respected by his work associates.He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Prudenville for over 50 years and frequently golfed with family and friends. He and Helen traveled across the Mid-West following ASA and ISC softball. He was a loyal race fan of his son Bill and son-in-law Steven at Merritt, Mt. Pleasant and Tri City Speedway. John will be remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, uncle and friend. He is survived by his sons, Bill of Prudenville, Wade (Paula) of Prudenville; daughter, Diane (Steven) Hilliker of Midland, 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, many loving nephews and nieces and best friend, Roger Florey. John was preceded in death by his daughter Carleen VonEitzen and great great granddaughter Gracie. Also predeceased by siblings Rose Ethel Whittington, Letha Hyatt, Herb Whittington, Marie Wagonlander, Dorothy Yoder, Onie Davis, Vera Hagley and many special in-laws. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 20 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly with interment following at the Midland City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 19 from 4 til 8 pm and on Friday from 9 am until the time of the service.
