(January 19, 1922 – June 23, 2010)

Joe fought the battle for a long time so God said you have earned your wings. God reached down and picked Joe up on June 23, 2010 and took him home. Joe was born Jan. 19, 1922 to the late Arson and Gladys (Spiker) Ellis in Detroit. They moved to Midland in 1929 and attended schools here. He was inducted in to the army on Dec. 8, 1942, and saw action in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was discharged on Nov. 7, 1945. Joe married the former Dorthy Grenke in Detroit on Jan. 25, 1947. Joe worked at Dow Chemical Co. in Midland for 39 yrs. retiring in Nov. 1979. After retiring Joe moved to Harrison then in 1989 he moved to Port Charlotte, FL and finally in 2001 he moved back to Midland where he resided until his death. Joe loved people and has many friends and always found good in everyone he met. He will truly be missed by all. Joe is survived by his best friend and companion Donna; son, Timothy of Harrison; grandchildren, Lindsey Nelson and Justin Nelson; brother, Bernard of Midland; sisters, Ethyl Jacobs, Mary Morrison and Shirley (Larry) Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Dorthy and daughter Lynn Nelson. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 25 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, with Pastor Paul Murphrey officiating. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 until 7 pm and on Friday from 9:00 am until the time of the service.
