(May 8, 1941 – July 19, 2012)

Karen Louise (Emerson) Holmes went to be with her Lord, on Thursday, July 19, 2012, after a short illness. Karen was born at the family home in Auburn, MI, on May 8, 1941, to the late Gordon and Maleta (Mackensen) Emerson. Her Grandma Mackensen was the midwife for her birth. Karen was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Beaver Township, where she attended school through the 8th grade. She graduated from Midland High School in 1959. Karen married Donald James Holmes on Sept. 30, 1961, at Zion. Karen began working at the Midland Paper Company as a high school co-op. After she and Don were married they moved to White Sands Missile Base where Don was stationed while serving in the army. They returned to Midland in 1963. After raising her three daughters, Karen returned to work at the Katt Insuranse Agency in Midland retiring in May of 2000. Karen was an avid volunteer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Midland focusing her energies on funeral luncheons, the quilting group and Women of St. John’s. Karen was honored to be a part of the church kitchen fundraising effort through the women’s group. Karen also served as the secretary for the Midland Horseshoe Club. Karen will be missed by her husband Donald, daughters Cynthia (Gary) Benner of Midland, Alaine (Bradley) Massey of Saline, and Florence (Larry) Randall of Midland; her grandchildren Michael and Jacob Benner, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Sarah Massey. Karen is also survived by her sisters, Alice (Jack) Crittenden, Carolyn Laplow, Laura (John) Sasse; twin brother James (Susan) Emerson; brother-in-law John (Diana) Holmes; many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, Karen was predeceased by brother-in-law Richard Laplow and sister-in-law Judy (Holmes) Schallhorn. A Funeral Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Monday, July 23, at 11:30 am with Pastors Daniel Kempin and Matthew Makela officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Sunday, July 22, from 4 til 7 pm and on Monday at the church from 10:30 until the time of the service.
