Welcome to Smith Miner

Laurence “Larry” McCann passed away December 28, 2017 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. He was born July 1,1937 to Gladys (Mapes) and Lawrence (George) McCann. He married Carolyn (Robertson), October 19,1956 and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Larry graduated from MIDLAND High School in 1956 where he lettered in football and baseball. He played on and managed several different fastpitch softball teams. As a member of Nick’s Bar softball team, Larry was inducted into the Michigan Softball Hall of Fame, along with his teammates. He also played hockey with the Monroe Oil Hockey team in his younger years. Larry enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting (preferred bow). Even though Larry had been confined to a wheelchair the last nine year he continued to love all sports and shot archery on a weekly basis. He lived and shared his motto, “you can do anything if you put your mind to it, don’t worry about your score or whatever, have FUN”.
Larry was a life member and past president of Mid-Michee Bowman CLUB, a life member of Whitetails Unlimited, a member of the American Legion, and a retiree U.A. local 85 as a welder.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, brothers; Newt Mapes and Norris McCann, sister; Carolyn Rys, brother-in-law; Robert Robertson, many nieces and nephews, and his faithful little Yorkie, Lucy. His best buddy, Pete Roland, who made every Tuesday “archery day” rain or shine and Mike Schweigert, who he hunted with and shared many stories and laughs.
He was predeceased by sisters; Norma (Frank) Shafer, Marilyn ( Robert) Davis, and Linda (Roy) Heath and his parents.
Carolyn would like to thank all family and friends who made life a little better for Larry by doing the things he could still do with him!
A special thank you to his caregiver of 9 years, Tracey, whom he had a daily dispute no matter the subject.
As per Larry’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Saturday January 13, 2018 at Poseyville United Methodist Church. Lyn Frazier will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at 12:00.
In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the Midland County Humane Society, Mid-Michee Bowman, or Poseyville United Methodist Church.
