LOUIS ARTHUR VAN METER died on August 21, 2010. He was born on September 27, 1919, at Ogemaw County, Michigan, to John L. and Mary (Schantz) Van Meter. He left Midland, Michigan, on August 21, 1941, bound for California and served in the army in World War II. He married Willie Lyons on April 3, 1944. He retired from Dow Chemical where he worked as a boiler maker for 40 years. He enjoyed his large family and family events. The annual Labor Day party was a highlight every year with all the family coming, beginning with racks of barbeque chicken lining the driveway. He loved farming, raising animals and gardening, beginning when he was a young boy raising rabbits and chickens. He progressed to milking dairy cows, raising Hereford cattle, pigs, turkeys and always having chickens in the coop. He also loved traveling and had many stories of the national parks and all of the states they had traveled to, including three trips to Alaska to visit family, help build a home, and fish for halibut. He wintered in Florida at Naples, beginning with trips to take his mother down, then short camping trips and finally becoming a snowbird and staying for six months of the year. He is survived by his wife, Willobelle (Lyons) Van Meter, children: Karen (husband – Garth, children – Christina and Michelle) Wonsitler, Louis (wife ?Çô Linda, children – Jeff and Jennifer) Van Meter, John (wife ?Çô Cathy, children – Brad and Bryan) Van Meter, Robert (wife ?Çô Jodi, children – Dana, Shannon, Robby) Van Meter, Marianne (husband ?Çô Tom, child – Amy) DeMott, Joanne (children – Jason, Jeremy, Jessica) Steenhagen, Suzie (husband ?Çô Dave, children ?Çô Angel and Justin) Sunday, Ann (husband ?Çô Jerry, children ?Çô Amanda and Matthew) Mueller, brothers: John and Melvin Van Meter, his sister Dena (Van Meter) Simmerman, and many great grandchildren.He was predeceased by daughter Diane (husband ?Çô Terry, children ?Çô Philip and Paul) Baumann, son Ronald Van Meter, granddaughter Katherine Wonsitler, grandson Donald Steenhagen, brother Harvey Van Meter, and sister Vera (Van Meter) Adams,.A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 3, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Homer Township Cemetery Chapel.
