Welcome to Smith Miner

Mary Carolyn Mitton, formerly of Salem, Indiana, passed away on December 30, 2021 in Midland, Michigan at the age of 82.

She was born on May 18, 1939, in Farmville, Virginia, the daughter of Herbert Dancy and Mary Wilson Pratt (Spencer) Steger. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1956 and attended Radford University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry. Her time in Virginia helped foster a lifelong love of genealogy, particularly in and around Buckingham County, Virginia.

In 1961, she was hired as a research chemist at Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan where she worked until 1978. She married Carl Greger Mitton (“Greg”) of Oaktown, Indiana on July 22, 1979. In 1980, she became a pilot with Comair Airlines, and in 1985 she became the first woman elected as Chairman of the Airline Pilots Association Master Executive Council. She continued to fly for Comair with her husband until her retirement in 1999.

Upon retirement, she moved to Salem Indiana. She could often be found enjoying her favorite pork carnitas at El Maguey and then stopping into the Apothecary for an ice cream. She was also an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a frequent volunteer for Old Settlers’ Days at both the John Hay Center in Salem and Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband James George Jenkins.

She is survived by her husband Greg; son James George Jenkins of Alger, MI; daughter Mary Sue Sylwestrzak (Theodore) of Beverly Hills, MI; and brother Herbert Dancy Steger Jr (Linda) of Huntsville, AL. She is also survived by her granddaughters Kristen Treat (Kyle) of Chicago, IL; Rachel Sylwestrzak of Troy, MI; Allisha Jenkins of Brant, MI; grandson Michael Gerard Jenkins (Chelsea Irish) of Midland, MI; and great-grandchildren Ava Jo and Gracie Mae Jenkins and James Hunter Peplinski of Midland, MI.
