Melvin A. Cook, 70, of Midland died peacefully April 21, 2010, at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit surrounded by his children. Melvin was born on April 7, 1940 in Harbor Beach, MI to the late Gladys (Susalla) and Phillip Cook. Melvin served his country in the U.S. Army for 2 years. He later owned and operated Cook’s Carpet for over 20 years and Doumel Tree Farms where he loved spending time on his tractor. His favorite time of the year was Christmas, where he shared his joy of the season with the community. He was a member of the Michigan Christmas Tree Assoc. and enjoyed fishing and having cookouts. Melvin is survived by his daughters, Lori (Dave) Reder of Midland, Melanie (Joe) Shugart of Los Angeles; son, Doug (Wendy) Cook of Midland; grandchildren, Joshua, Tyler and Ericka Reder, Jacob and Taylor Cook; his former wife Joyce Cook and his special friend Bonnie McHugh. He is also survived by his sisters Delphine Cook and Joanne (John) Cook- Bowers, brothers, Hilary (Marie) Cook, Tom (Arlene) Cook, Dan (Linda) Cook. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Monday, April 26, at 2:00 pm with Father Pete Gaspeny officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Sunday April 25 from 4 to 7 pm at and at the church from 1pm until the time of the service.
