Nora S. Closs (nee Shea), age 87, a long-time Midland resident, passed away early Tuesday morning (January 29, 2013) in Portage, MI. She was born in Gladwin, MI on July 28, 1925, the daughter of Mortimer and Dorothy (Baumann) Shea. She grew up on the Shea Farm with many stories of those years to share. Following graduation from Gladwin High School in 1943, she moved to Midland, where she lived most of her life, and worked for Dow Chemical for several years.Nora married Joseph P. Closs on January 22, 1949 and dedicated most of her life to her husband, raising their five children and then enjoying her grandchildren. She and Joe enjoyed many life-long friends, world travel together, and many friends at their cottage at Pretty Lake (Mecosta, MI). When not spending time with her children and grandchildren, Nora worked in administrative positions for the City of Midland and volunteered many hours at Blessed Sacrament Parish and many other places in Midland. She also often worked at the polls from which she seemed to always have her voting money. She also volunteered as a Scout leader and for the Kings Daughters Home. Joe predeceased her in 2001.Surviving are her children and their spouses: David J. and Noel Eve Closs of Williamston, Kathryn A. Closs of Annandale, NJ, Joanne E. and Ted Petropoulos of Portage, Thomas S. and Janis Closs of Parker, CO, and Stephen M. and Caroline Closs of Beaverton, OR. Nora will be missed by her 10 grandchildren: Ellen Closs and Meg (Michael) Quickel; Andrew, Michael, and Alissa Petropoulos; Caitlin, Justin, and Jacquelin Closs; and Tara and Ryan Closs. She was also anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild (Baby Quickel) in May. Also surviving are her two sisters and their husbands: Roseanne (Frank) Barber (Auburn) and Donna (Ronald) Thompson (Midland); brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law including Patricia Crossman and Leon (Midland), Anna Lee Shea (Gladwin), Jake Vitkuske (Midland), Betty Shea (Gladwin), Patricia Closs (Plano, TX), and Donald K. (Patti) Closs (Mission Viejo, CA); and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, two brothers and four sisters predeceased her: Mortimer Shea, Jr., Margaret Shea, Frances Liddy, Ruth Haight, Mary Vitkuske, and Donald Shea. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Richard Ottoson (Kathryn).The family would like to thank the staff at Bickford Assisted Living in Portage and the nurses and staff at Kalamazoo Hospice. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, February 1, 2013 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Eddie Dwyer Celebrant. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 4 until 7 pm at which time a vigil service will be held. The family will also receive friends on Friday at the Church from 9:00 am until the time of the service.
