Phyllis Irene Allen, 79, of Midland passed away peacefully on May 1, 2011 in her home as she wanted. Phyllis was born on January 17, 1932 in Decatur, Ill to Sarah (Lawyer) and Gailen B. Allen. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1950 and worked in Decatur until she moved to Michigan in 1964. In Midland, Phyllis was a caregiver for her invalid mother and she had been employed as a housekeeper and child care provider for several local families. She was a faithful Christian woman and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. For many seasons, she had enjoyed singing with the Midland City Chorale. Surviving Phyllis are her brother Donald (Bonnie) Allen of Leigh High Acres, FL; brother-in-law, Donald Miller of Midland; and sisters-in-law Kathryn Allen of Palmetto, FL and Roberta Allen of Decatur Ill. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents; her sister Betty Miller; and brothers Richard Allen, William Allen, Gailen Allen Jr., Daniel Allen and James Allen; aunt and uncle Pauline and Ray Allen; uncle Harold Lawyer; nieces Sally Bledsoe and Karen Miller. On Phyllis’ behalf, her family wishes to thank all those who stood by her in her declining years including the management and her neighbors at Greenhill Apartments, Dr. Gary Smith and his nurse Jennifer, Midland County Council on Aging – Senior Services, the health care staff at Brittany Manor and especially Phyllis’ assistant and beloved friend, Pamela Toner of Midland. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 10 at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly with Pastor Daniel Kempin officiating. Phyllis’ family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1 pm until the time of service. A private burial at Midland City Cemetery will follow.
