Ralph E. “Red” Merrill, 82, died on Nov. 11, 2009 at Brittany Manor in Midland, MI. Red was born on Aug. 2, 1927 in Athens, PA to the late Alberta Lucy (Arnold) and Charles Alonzo Merrill. Then on Aug. 2, 1947 he married his sweetheart Viola Alberta Lawrence and she preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 2006. Red loved his family especially his grandchildren. He also loved his golden retriever Hanna, his Harley, his Peterbuilt truck, his neighbors and his End-O-Lake campground. Red loved helping people. He was a supreme fixit man and could not get enough of the outdoors. Red served as a Seaman 1st class in the U. S. Navy during WWII, and was honorably discharged in Aug. 1946. He owned a Gulf Service station and was a truck driver, retiring in 2000. Red is survived by his sons Steve (Donna) Merrill of Midland, Michael Merrill of Rouses Pt. NY; grandchildren, Rebecca Merrill, MD, Joseph Merrill (PharmD candidate); sisters, Eileen (Jack) Shedd and Eva Sweitzer. Red was predeceased by his brothers Raymond, Clayton, Wallace and sister Martha Young. A Funeral Service will be held on Nov. 23, 2009 at the Chateaugay Funeral Home in Chateaugay, NY with internment to follow at the Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
