Richard Duane Hilliker, a native Midlander, passed away at the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland, shortly after midnight on January 31, 2011. Richard was born in Midland on May 27, 1934, and after attending Midland Public Schools, married his wife of 55 years, also a native Midlander, Dawn Hilliker (Klinert), on August 6, 1955, in Midland. Richard also served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Richard is survived by his brother Ed (Floyd) of Coleman, and preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Hilliker, his mother, Lola Hilliker (Westendorf), brother, Benjamin, Jr.; and sister, Shirley Boyce. Other survivors include his three children, Steven (Diane) Hilliker, of Midland; Connie (Seth) Nankee, of Clarkston , son David Hilliker, of Midland Richard leaves behind five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Adam and wife Sarah Nankee, of Brighton; Andrea Hilliker and her son, Jace, of Baltimore, MD; Kimberly and husband Jeremy Zehr and their son Easton, of Amana, IA; Kayla Hilliker, of Midland and Derrick Hilliker, also of Midland.For thirty-five years, Richard supported his wife while she played fast pitch softball, chauffeuring her around the Midwest and Canada and taking care of the children so she could play ball. Richard retired after roughly thirty years of employment with Everett Carpet Company as the “Best Darn Floor Craftsman in the State”. Richard was an avid bowler and golfer, and spent a lot of his time supporting his sons in their racing careers, as they too, traveled across the Midwest. Richard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made the best steaks the family has ever tasted. Dad, grandpa, you will be missed by all of us. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday. Feb. 3, at 11:00 am at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, with son Steven Hilliker officiating. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 4 until 7 pm, and on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Military rights will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Marine Corps. and the Midland County Veterans. In lieu of flowers the family requests that those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider giving to the Toni and Trish Hospice House in Auburn.
