Robert Donald Phelan, 91, of Midland, formerly of Birmingham, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at MidMichigan Stratford Village. Bob was born June 29, 1918 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Lucius and Alice (Whittaker) Phelan. He graduate from Mackenzie High School in Detroit in 1936 then attended the University of Detroit. He served in the US Army during WWII at Ft. Benning, GA. Bob married the former Ann Taylor on November 18, 1944, in LaGrange, IL. Together they moved to Birmingham, MI where they were actively involved in both their church and community. He worked for the Dibble Color Company in Detroit for 34 years as a salesman. Ann predeceased him in 2002. Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Selkirk, MI. He also loved to read and was always happy to learn something new. His conversation, wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his sons, Mike (Judy) Phelan of Boca Raton, FL, Dan Phelan of Alpharetta, GA, John (Sandy) Phelan of Milford; and his daughter, Kitty (Steve) Copus of Midland; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, March 19, 2010 from St. Agnes Catholic Church – Sanford with Father Dan Fox as Celebrant. Entombment will follow in New Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will greet friends from 10:00 am until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider The American Cancer Society or Children International. The Phelan Community Center in the Dominican Republic is currently under construction through Children International and will be dedicated to Bob’s memory in June, 2010.
