Welcome to Smith Miner

(April 8, 1988 – March 23, 2010)

Our beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin, Ruth-Marie “Ruthie” Putnam Smith, 21, of Midland passed away Tuesday, March 23, as a result of an automobile accident. She was traveling back to college from Detroit Metro Airport. The daughter of William and Barbara (Putnam) Smith was born in Midland, Michigan on April 8, 1988. Ruthie graduated from H.H. Dow High School in 2006. She was a senior at Michigan State University majoring in Horticulture. She was going to graduate May 8 with a Bachelor of Science. She was looking forward to experiencing a new chapter in her life following graduation. Ruthie was a very caring and giving young lady with a gentle heart. She loved her family deeply. Spending time with good friends was always special for her. She was able to share a wonderful time on a family trip this past Christmas with 25 members of her family. She cherished the time she could spend with all of her cousins. Being with everyone at the cottage in Ludington was very special and was looked forward to every year. She loved the arts, dance, and music. They were all a big part of her life. She played viola in the Dow High Honors Orchestra, Midland Community Orchestra and M.S. U. Orchestra. She danced for many years in ballet, point, tap, hip-hop and jazz. She enjoyed dancing in the Nutcracker and the Dow High production of West Side Story. Ruthie was very involved with volunteering throughout high school and college. She liked being part of activities where she felt she could really help people and make a difference. In high school she was a member of National Honor Society, Key Club and Presbyterian Youth Fellowship. She had been on the Dean’s list at M.S.U. and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She enjoyed participating in the various horticultural activities on campus and had been a facilitator for an urban gardening workshop in Lansing. Ruthie loved to travel. She enjoyed learning about new people, places and ideas. She was always open and accepting of everyone. Ruthie is survived by her parents William and Barbara (Putnam) Smith of Midland, her brother Ethan Smith, of Midland, her sister, Abigail Smith of Midland and family puppy Riley, two half sisters, Michelle Smith, of Marshall, Melissa (Joseph) West, of Coldwater, half brother Marcus (Jennifer) Smith of Marshall, grandmother Mildred Putnam of Midland, grandmother, Mildred Smith of Marshall. She has many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandfathers Mark Sheldon Putnam and William Smith. She leaves behind her boyfriend Sean MacEachern of Fayetteville, Arkansas, who she loved dearly. Funeral Services for Ruthie will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Wallace Mayton III officiating. Visitation will be before the service from 9:30-11:00. A luncheon in Fellowship Hall will immediately follow the service. Burial at Midland Cemetery will be at 2:00.
