Vernon D. Smith, 76, of Midland, passed away on September 1, 2018 at Nottingham Place. He was born on August 19, 1942 to the late Melvin and Elsie (Seaman) Smith. He married Mary Ellen Hitchcock who predeceased him on May 9, 2016. They were married for 52 years.
Vern honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. Vern worked as a pipefitter for Dow Chemical for over 30 years. He enjoyed watching ball games, working on cars and was an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. Vern was a Big Brother for several years through Big Brothers Big Sister of Great Lakes. Family, children and grandchildren, were most important to Vern.
Vern is survived by his children; LouAnn (Clare) Trischler, Tamara (Craig) Vickery, Matthew (Julie) Smith, grandchildren; Lyndi Trischler, Kalen Trischler, Morgan Trischler, Braden Trischler, Kevin Vickery, Maegen Vickery, Bryar Smith, great grandchildren, Emery and Rylen.
He is also survived by his siblings; Ernie (Tillie) Smith, Marilyn (Francis) Johnson, Don (Ruth) Smith, Roger (Jill) Smith and in-laws, Clifford Jr. (Alice) Hitchcock and Mike McLaughlin.
Vern was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Elsie, in-laws, Clifford Sr. and Lydia Hitchcock, sisters, Marie Estes, Bev McLaughlin, Brenda Bailey, sister-in-law, Nina (Bill) Babcock, and great-grandson, Luca.
A Memorial Service will be held at Eagle Ridge Church of God on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Bill Greiner officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday at the church from 10:30 am until the time of service.
