Welcome to Smith Miner

Virginia Mae Popp, 101, (only 12 days away from her 102nd birthday), passed away peacefully on Monday, June 28, 2021, at Stratford Pines Nursing Home in Midland, MI, surrounded by her family. She was born July 10, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Arthur & Lola Vandemark.


Virginia (known to her friends as Ginny) grew up in Lima, Ohio and moved to Michigan in 1958. She married her high school sweetheart, Don Moorman, in 1947 and enjoyed only 19 years of marriage until he suffered fatal heart attack in 1966 at the age of 49. In 1973, she married again to Louis Popp and enjoyed 34 years of marriage before his passing in 2008.


In her younger years, Virginia enjoyed singing in her church choir, playing cards with her pinochle club, dancing, crafts, knitting, ceramics, camping with family and friends, traveling, and playing the organ. In her later years, she became an avid reader, loved working crossword puzzles, playing bingo, going to the movies and dining out.


Virginia is survived by her two daughters, Judy (Jack) Sims of Sanford, MI, Bonnie Miller (Terry Flahart) of Clinton Township, MI, grandchildren Kimberly (Jim) McGlothlin, Jeffrey (Matilda) Riggen, Ronald Jr. (Dawn) Byrd, Christopher Miller, 10 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and 1 brother, Robert Vandemark of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her sister, Pauline Keller of Vero Beach, FL preceded her in death in January 2014. Virginia will be greatly missed by her family and friends.


Funeral arrangements are handled by Smith-Miner Funeral Home in Midland, Ml. Burial take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima, Ohio, where both her parents, one daughter who died at birth, and her first husband, Don Moorman are already buried.

    Virginia will be forever remembered and forever missed! I have such fond memories of Virginia from when she lived at king’s Daughters Home. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
